Beam's program focuses on skill-building, collaborative challenge, responsibility and mentorship while retaining a culture of community, exploration and supported risk-taking.
PROGRAM AREAS
The Big Project
The centerpiece of the Beam Camp program. The third week of the session will be dedicated almost exclusively to the Project Challenge. Camper-led teams of campers will be challenged to execute phases of the Project autonomously. They will be supervised by the Project Staff, but it will be up to them to ask for specific guidance and support if they encounter roadblocks.
Independent Projects
Campers take the skills explored during the Big Project Sessions, and taught in our shop spaces (Wood shop, Metal shop, Digital Fabrication Lab, and Arts Studio) and translate them to real world applications. Regardless of session length, campers are invited to work alongside shop specialists to design, plan, and build their own Independent Projects. Examples include jewelry, furniture, sculpture, clothing, mosaic, and more.
Domains
In the first and second weeks of camp, campers choose guest-led Domains, hands-on, discovery activities in the arts, performance, sciences, athletic or cultural fields.
Community Care
During Community Care, campers learn and practice skills that power the delight we share at camp: cooking, agriculture, facility maintenance and event planning.
Swim and Pulse
Each day, every camper has the opportunity to swim and take part in athletics and active play.
Basic Daily Schedule
WEEKS 1 & 2: THE BIG PROJECT + DOMAINS
See the schedule below for a sample schedule followed during the first 2 weeks of our four-week session. Though our daily schedule may shift slightly year to year, the period lengths and number of periods remain consistent.
WEEKS 3 & 4: PROJECT CHALLENGE
During weeks 3 and 4 of our four-week session, the schedule remains largely the same, with the exception for domain periods which are replaced with an additional project periods for each camper. Campers maintain the same amount of free/rest time throughout their session at camp, but as we approach the end of our 4 weeks, we enter what we call the “Project Crunch.”
