PROJECT MASTER: YE QIN ZHU
“A Universe,” designed by artist Ye Qin Zhu and built by 110 Beam Campers and staff, stands at 30’ long and 10’8” at its tallest point. Constructed of cob and lime plaster and inspired by the Taoist belief that the celestial universe is a bottle gourd, Ye’s piece resembles the number 8, a mobius strip that runs for infinity.
When it rains, water streams into channels carved on its outside walls and down to the windows, where there are instruments made by Campers that fill up, tip, spill, hit notes, and make music. Inside, there are large feet, hands, and heads lining the walls, resembling a body turned outside in.
